There are many benefits to becoming a volunteer firefighter, including helping your community, being part of our family, training, and more. There are many jobs within the fire company.

Some jobs along with their descriptions are listed below:

Interior – Firefighter: Must be in good health. Firefighters answer the call for help, putting out fires and performing rescues. Carrying hoses, climbing ladders and operating various machines and specialized equipment are many of the jobs you will do. Training is very important aspect of firefighter. We provide several monthly in-house training sessions, as well as sending you to NYS Fire Training Programs.

Exterior – Firefighter: Must be in good health. Answers calls for help. Exterior firefighters support Interior firefighters by performing outside operations. Firefighters may carry equipment, climb ladders and operate machines and specialized equipment. Training is very important aspect of firefighter. We provide several monthly in-house training sessions, as well as sending you to NYS Fire Training Programs.

Driver – Firefighter: Must be 21 years of age or older and in good health. Must possess a valid New York State driver’s license. All drivers must be a member of the Ontario Fire Company for 1 year prior to driving the apparatus. Drivers are needed to safely get emergency equipment and firefighters to the scene of an emergency. Once on location, drivers operate a variety of pumps, generators, lights and tools to support emergency work. Driver training will be provided and you will be required to pass several tests in order to be a “Qualified Driver”.

Fire Police – Firefighter: Must be in good health. Your own transportation is helpful. Fire Police provide safety and security to fire crews. Fire Police direct traffic around emergency scenes, assist motorist and provide crowd control. Good public relation skills are a MUST.

Everyone receives appropriate safety equipment and training at no cost.

All applicants must be 18 years of age or older and out of High School. Applicants must be a resident of the town of Ontario for at least one year prior to membership, unless you are transferring from another district, in which case you need only be a resident for one month.
